  • Platoon 4 Responds to Sleeping Giant State Park for Mountain Rescue
    Updated On: Feb 06, 2012

At approximately 16:19 hours on Sunday, February 5, 2012, Engine 9, Squad 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1 and Car 3 were dispatched to 200 Mount Carmel Ave, The Sleeping Giant State Park, for a report of a hiker who had fallen off the "chin" portion of the mountain, falling approximately 200 feet into the rocks below.*

When personnel reached the victim, Lifestar medical helicopter was requested due to extremely serious injuries to the victim and the possibility of a prolonged extrication from the area the victim fell. However, due to quick work by crews on scene, lifestar was cancelled and the victim was transported by ground ambulance to YNHH with Hamden Paramedics on board assisting AMR EMT’s.

Initially it was reported that the victim was conscious when rescuers reached him and was still alive at the hospital.  However, due to the severity of his injuries, today we have learned that the victim has passed away.

A valiant effort was made to save this young man's life by all personnel in a complex extrication of a victim with serious injuries in very difficult terrain.  It is an unfortunate outcome and our thoughts are with the victim and his family.

    * Multiple companies were already out on a box alarm that had just come in just a few minutes prior. Engine 5 was able to handle the box in their district and the other companies were dispatched to the mountain. Engine 5 responded to the park after they cleared, initially to set up a landing zone for lifestar, but that request was cancelled. The ATV was picked up from Station 5 and also responded to this call and was utilized in the rescue of the individual.
