AN ambulance attending the scene of a crash in which a van had been blown on to its side in New Zealand's North Island was, in turn, blown over in the gale.
Attending to an accident near Featherston, about 60km northeast of the national capital Wellington - which in turn has a reputation as a windy city - the ambulance had two paramedics and an observer in it when it was blown over yesterday, The Dominion Post said.
"The two paramedics suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken to the Masterton Hospital by another vehicle sent to the site," an ambulance service spokesman told the newspaper.
MetService forecaster Heath Gullery said a 135km/h gust was recorded in the region yesterday....

Mayor Bloomberg's massive $2 billion effort to centralize and upgrade the city's 911 system has suffered another big setback.
A key computer program from a Verizon subcontractor has failed final quality reviews in recent weeks, and top officials are on the verge of canceling the contract and finding a new vendor, several sources working on the project told the Daily News.
"When the new software gets saturated with calls for EMS and police, it can't handle the load and the system starts dropping calls," said one source involved in the testing process. In any "big public emergency" like a blackout or terrorist attack, "it would just break down," the source said.

An East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company (Suffolk County, NY) FF was injured yesterday after the roof of a burning building collapsed, burying the Firefighter. Numerous FD's responded to the Lindenhurst fire at about 0200 hours at the commercial structure. As Firefighters attempted to enter the building, the roof and front wall of the building collapsed (see below). 1 FF remains in Good Sam hospital with fractures. 3 other members others were taken to hospitals, but not admitted.

According to unofficial reports, this fire was transmitted by way of radio by an EMS unit returning to quarters. They discovered the fire in a 1 story large commercial building used as a food processing plant. There was heavy fire and fire was through the roof on the arrival of the first due companies. The building was reportedly constructed of non combustible materials including cinder block walls with a brick facade, metal bar joist roof covered with "Q" decking and membrane roof. Unknown if sprinklered. Reports are that shortly after the arrival of the first due companies and while the first lines were being stretched and forcible entry was being made, a collapse of the exterior brick facade, going down on 3 Firefighters who were forcing entry to gain access. According to some on the scene, the collapse occurred without warning. There was no visible bulging of the exterior wall nor was there any smoke pushing through mortar cracks, however there was fire thru the roof and considerable fire advancement.
This has been a busy week for Firefighters in the Suffolk County (Long Island, NY) Town of Babylon with several other multi-alarm fires, including an equivalent 5th alarm in Amityville:

The BFD members all suffered from extreme exhaustion and water inhalation but all had non-life-threatening injuries. At 1000 hours on Friday, a rip current statement was issued by the NWS, warning people to stay out of Lake Michigan. Bridgman Fire and Rescue turned out for mutual aid with Lincoln Township for the water rescue just after 1600 hours at a private beach where 3 men were swimming in high waves (ignoring the warning) and were caught in the very rough current. Sadly, the 26-year-old Chicago resident is presumed drowned. Rescue attempts were limited because of high winds and strong rip currents. A Coast Guard helicopter searched the area without success....

THE head of the NSW Ambulance Service yesterday issued a public apology to the family of a young woman who was run down and killed by paramedics on Friday night.
The woman, believed to be in her 20s, died after being hit by an ambulance vehicle at the intersection of Parramatta Rd and Mallett St, Camperdown about 10pm.
Ambulance service chief executive Greg Rochford offered his condolences yesterday, saying in a statement that the entire organisation had been shocked by the event.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, which has also affected everyone in the ambulance service," Mr Rochford said.
"The paramedics involved in the accident were most distressed by the incident."
Witnesses said the woman appeared to walk into the path of the ambulance, which had its sirens blaring.
"I saw the lady there not moving. A doctor who was walking past had stopped and he was checking her pulse," a man who saw the incident, but asked not to be named, said.
"I asked if I could help, and then I noticed the two ambulance officers just sitting there in shock."
The male ambulance driver and female paramedic tried to revive the pedestrian, but she died at the scene....
A 50-year-old man was killed while eight were hurt after a multi-cab collided with a speeding ambulance in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental Friday.
The incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. in Mansilingan village, news site Visayan Daily Star reported Saturday.
Killed on the spot was Jayme Dacumos, 50, of Purok Torrecampo in Cabug village in Bacolod City.
Dacumos’ nephews Jordan Isyu, 16; Richard Golosino, 20; and Brian Golosino, 14, were also injured and were rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital.
The three were on the multi-cab (JCP-871) driven by Dacumos.
Also injured were ambulance driver Ramonito Marcial, 63; and passengers Edgar De Castro, 36; Jerry Garejo, 19; Noel Guingson, 70; and Marivic Carejo, 16.
Carejo was being transported to the hospital. She and the other occupants of the ambulance were brought to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center.
Investigation showed the multi-cab was heading east of Hernaez Extension near Bangga Arca when it collided with the approaching ambulance (SDK-566).
The impact destroyed the rear of the ambulance while the multi-cab was wrecked.
Marcial said he tried to evade the multi-cab when he saw it approaching but it was already too late. He insisted his pace was not very fast.
He apologized to the family of Dacumos, saying he hopes they will not blame him for their relative’s death because it was an accident. — LBG, GMANews.TV ...
Three firefighters were injured and several residents were left homeless after an apartment building caught fire in Lyndon.
Three Lyndon firefighters were taken to a hospital -- one for chest pain, the other for burns and a minor ankle injury.
"One firefighter had to jump off a second-story balcony with second- and third-degree burns to his hands, and from the fall, he has a possible ankle injury," said Rick Tonini, the public information officer for the St. Matthews Fire District....
An East Farmingdale firefighter was hospitalized Saturday after the roof of a burning building in Lindenhurst collapsed, burying the firefighter underneath, the department's fire chief said.
Eight fire departments responded to the fire at about 2 a.m. inside a commercial building on Gear Avenue, off Wellwood Avenue, in Lindenhurst, East Farmingdale fire chief James Yearsley said. As firefighters tried to enter the building, the roof and front wall of the building collapsed, he said.
The firefighter was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he remained Saturday. His name was not released. Three others were taken to hospitals, but not admitted, Yearsley said.
Firefighters used ladders and fire hoses to bring the blaze under control from outside the building. They remained on the scene late Saturday morning to cool off a handful of remaining hot spots beneath the wreckage, Yearsley said.
